LAS VEGAS

Department of Family and Community Medicine

With over 400 Family Medicine Programs in the U.S. why consider ours? Here are the top ten reasons:

10) Family VacationsHome call, 1:8 Call Schedule and Most Holidays Off

In this program our residents work hard but they also have free time to enjoy family, friends, hobbies, or whatever they like. Residents only take home call, have a 1:8 call schedule and get most holidays off in their 2nd and 3rd years.

9)  Weather

Las Vegas has over 300 days of sunshine and very mild winters. No more snow!

8) Las Vegas

Las Vegas is one of the world's top tourist destinations with 5 star entertainment including restaurants, clubs, shows, and hotels. Also, with no state income tax and bargain housing prices, it is one of the most affordable places to live in the country.

7) 5 Year Accreditation

In 2009, we received the maximal accreditation of 5 years from the ACGME.

6) "Opposed" Program

Yes, we list this as positive aspect of our program. In the internship year, residents receive intense training as they rotate on the different residency services including Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Surgery, Emergency Medicine, and OB-Gyn. After their internship year, our residents are well prepared for the the remainder of their training and beyond.

5) Board Passage Rate

Over 90% of our recent graduates have passed the Family Medicine Boards on their first try over the last 9 years. Also, over the last 6 years, our residents have scored above the national average on the American Board of Family Medicine Annual In-Training Exam.

4) Community Involvment

Our faculty and residents are heavily involved in our community performing hundreds of health fairs, flu shot clinics, Tar Wars anti-tobacco presentations, high school sports physicals, cancer screening clinics, community health presentations, and working at the Volunteers of Southern Nevada free health clinic.

3) Manageable Inpatient Service and Outpatient Clinic

Our residents are well prepared to manage their patients in the hospital when they graduate, but our inpatient service is not overwhelming as we average 5-6 patients per resident. Our residents also have over 1800 outpatient visits at our FMC over 3 years, well above the ACGME requirement of 1650.

2) Fellowships

Our Department offers 3 fellowships including Sports Medicine, Obstetrics, and 1 of only 3 Urgent Care Fellowships in the country. Click here to learn more about our fellowships.

1) Our Graduates' Job Placement

Our residents have no trouble finding employment after graduation. Click here for a list of where our graduates now work.
